Two people can rent the same size bin, throw in the same amount of stuff, and get very different results. One fits the whole project in with room to spare. The other runs out of space halfway and has to book a second bin.
The difference is almost always how they packed it. This guide covers how to load a dumpster properly — the order to load in, how to save space, and how to stay inside the weight limit.
Think of it like packing a moving truck. Order matters.
Air is the enemy of a well-packed bin. A whole dresser is mostly empty space. Broken into flat panels it takes half the room.
Most “I need a second bin” calls come back to one of these.
Avoid those five and a standard bin holds more than most people expect. The bin sizes and pricing are set out in full if you are still choosing.
Knowing how to load a dumpster only helps if you started with the right bin. These are realistic capacities for a well-packed load, not best-case numbers.
If you pack badly, a 20-yard bin holds about as much as a well-packed 12-yard. That gap is the whole reason this guide exists.
Renovation debris is the hardest thing to pack because it arrives in the wrong order. Demolition comes out first and it is the bulkiest, awkward material — cabinets, drywall, framing, old flooring.
The trick is to hold back your flat material. Keep old doors, countertops, cabinet backs and sheets of plywood aside as demolition starts, and lay them in as your base. Then load the rest on top.
Good loading solves most capacity problems, but not all of them. Book a second bin or a swap up front if:
A swap is simple: we take the full bin and leave an empty one, so the work never stops. Our guide to rental periods and swaps covers how to time it.
Load flat items first as a base, then heavy pieces low and spread out, then small debris in the gaps, then light bulky items on top. Break down furniture, flatten boxes and roll carpet.
No. The load must sit level with the top rim so the bin can be hauled safely and legally. An overfilled bin may need to be unloaded first.
Concrete, dirt, tile and shingles are dense, so they reach the weight limit before the bin looks full. For heavy debris, use a concrete bin.
Hazardous waste, tires, batteries, propane tanks and electronics. Most have free recycling or drop-off options. Ask us if you are unsure about an item.
Tell us the type of work and rough volume and we will suggest a size with a little room to spare.
Yes. It is one of the best space savers. A whole dresser is mostly air. Broken into panels it takes half the room.
