calgary landfill fees

Calgary Landfill Fees in 2026: Haul It Yourself or Rent a Bin?

What City of Calgary landfills charge in 2026 for garbage, drywall and yard waste, where the three landfills are, and when a bin works out better.

Calgary landfill fees in 2026 are $113 per tonne for garbage, with a $25 flat charge for any load under 250 kg. Drywall and clean recyclable wood are $90 per tonne, yard waste is $50 per tonne, and tires are free to drop off.

Because the scale weighs your vehicle on the way in and out, you only pay for what you leave behind. Even so, for a garage or basement clean-out the fee is rarely the big cost. The trips are.

Key takeaway
In short: for one small load, the landfill is usually cheapest: $25 under 250 kg, or $113 a tonne for garbage. When a job needs several trips, a truck you do not have, or days of loading, a 12-yard bin from $325 often works out better.

Two things catch people out. First, the $275 hard-to-handle surcharge comes on top of the weight charge for some bulky or awkward loads. Second, drywall and recyclable wood only get the lower $90 rate when they are clean and kept separate. Mixed in with general junk, expect the garbage rate.

Calgary’s three landfills

The City runs three landfills that take residential loads:

  • East Calgary Landfill, 3020 68 Street SE
  • Spyhill Landfill, 11808 69 Street NW
  • Shepard Landfill, 12111 68 Street SE

Hours change with the season and on statutory holidays. For example, East Calgary closes on Sundays from November for the winter. So check the City’s landfill hours and locations page on the day you plan to go.

Tarp every load. The City requires every load to be tarped and secured. If it is not, the City can add a surcharge, reject the load or refuse entry.

Haul it yourself or rent a bin? A worked example

Take a typical single-car garage clean-out: old furniture, boxes, a broken shelving unit and some scrap lumber. Say it comes to about one tonne and needs three trailer loads.

What it takes
Haul it yourself vs a 12-yard bin
What it takes
Cost
Haul it yourself vs a 12-yard bin
Haul it yourself: about 1 tonne × $113, so about $113, as long as no load gets the $275 hard-to-handle surcharge.
12-yard bin: starting at $325, with delivery, pickup and 1 tonne of disposal included.
What it takes
Vehicle
Haul it yourself vs a 12-yard bin
Haul it yourself: a truck or trailer (borrowed or rented), fuel, and a tarp and straps for every load.
12-yard bin: none. We drop the bin on your driveway.
What it takes
Time
Haul it yourself vs a 12-yard bin
Haul it yourself: loading, driving to the landfill, waiting at the scale and unloading, three times over.
12-yard bin: load it at your own pace for up to 14 days. Then we pick it up.

On Calgary landfill fees alone, hauling a load or two yourself usually costs less. However, a bin starts to make sense when the job takes more than a couple of trips. It also helps when you do not have a truck or trailer, or when your time is worth more than an afternoon at the scale. See our bin sizes and prices for the full list, including what costs extra.

When hauling it yourself makes sense

  • One small load. A few bags or a single piece of furniture under 250 kg costs a flat $25.
  • Free items. Tires, electronics and household hazardous waste are free to drop off. Our guides to tire disposal and paint disposal cover these.
  • Scrap metal. You can sell some of it rather than dump it. See scrap metal prices in Calgary.
  • You already have a truck and the job is one trip.

When a bin makes more sense

  • Renovations and clean-outs that produce several loads over days or weeks
  • Heavy material such as concrete, brick or shingles, which is hard on a personal vehicle. We have a dedicated concrete bin for this.
  • No truck or trailer. Renting one, plus fuel, quickly closes the gap with a bin.
  • Bulky loads that could get the hard-to-handle surcharge at the landfill

A few items carry an added fee in a bin as well, such as tires, mattresses and appliances. The dumpster rental page lists each one, so you know the cost before you load. Then, to choose a size, see what size bin do I need?
